Art & Francoise Visit Montreal!

Two weeks ago, we had the great pleasure of co-hosting with Montreal's SBC Gallery, Art Spiegelman, who kindly headlined a fundraiser titled "WHAT THE %&*! HAPPENED TO COMICS?" for the Gallery, which also served as the only Canada launch for his gorgeous and epic new book METAMAUS. If you ever get a chance to see Art speak in person, YOU MUST GO! His talk is poignant, funny, informative and very very moving.

Over 600 people attended for Art's fantastic, mindblowing lecture. The crowd winded its way around Concordia University.

Some celebs in attendance.

Joe Ollmann & Pascal Girard

Ghost Pine Writer Jeff Miller & Sarah Spike.

Mark Lang and his son.

Here's our Librairie D+Q staffer Chantale with Tom, and our Librairie director Jason, manning the table, selling copies left and right, (though you wouldn't be able to tell from this photo! get to work!)

Obviously it is not everyday that Art Spiegelman comes to town, but it's definitely not every day that New Yorker cover editor, Toon Books Publisher & RAW-copublisher Francoise Mouly and Art Spiegelman come together-even if they are married! Here she is with the Chief at the SBC Gallery.

Here's Jessica trying to pretend she doesn't spend a lot of time in fancy art galleries.

Here's Art entertaining the crowd at the SBC gallery while Michel Choquette makes sure Art sees Someday Funnies, his "new" book (40 years in the making) from Abrams out this winter.

The next day we were able to spend a nice leisurely day with Art & Francoise, showing them our store, and having lunch. Since we usually see them hurriedly at conventions, this was wonderful.

Here's Francosie presiding over her Toon Books section in the store. Interestingly, the Casterman editions all of the Toon books are in english and french, which is perfect for Montreal!

Art was kind enough to sign some stock and talked shop.

I then dragged them to the D+Q office to see where the "magic happens".

We would like to say thanks to the SBC Gallery, and to Art and Francoise for being so kind and gracious. The Chief started D+Q expressly out of being inspired by RAW, so it was really wonderful to be able to host them. Thanks to everyone!
