On the Strip

Rutu's NYT Funny Pages strip is now up online. As an added bonus they have an added online feature called On the Strip featuring a slide show on Exit Wounds, the upcoming short story collection Jamilti and Rutu's NYT blog from last year called Mixed Emotions.

Did we mention that Rutu will be a special guest at Comic-con in San Diego?

Hello Lucky #2 and Berlin #16, goodbye Alison

Departing D+Q staffer Alison Naturale gleefully takes in the latest comics from Gabrielle Bell and Jason Lutes.

Take that, Sanrio!

During my recent travels in China, I kept coming across a familiar beaming bulbous face everywhere I turned. No, I don't mean Mao; China has moved on to the cult of Moomin!

Pictured here: Moomin animal crackers, Moomin fruit candies, Moomin safety scissors, Moomin coaster, Moomin pen, Moomin passport holder (I can't wait to watch Tom Devlin explain that one to a surly border guard!)

My favorite? The garishly-colored Moomin card holders, of course! Because the image on the front of Moomin and Snorkmaiden riding dolphins into the sunset says much more about its owner than an identity card ever could.

Welcome, Red Colored Elegy (Tom's baby)

In the office now!

Rutu Modan's Funny Pages

Starting this week, Rutu Modan will be the featured cartoonist of the New York Times Magazine "Funny Pages", with her black comedy The Murder of the Terminal Patient, which takes place in an Internal Medicine Ward in an Israeli hospital. A famous singer dies from a terminal disease, but his best friend believes that he was murdered. Nurse Dima, who was a Pathologist before he immigrated to Israel, decides to investigate the case. Here are some sneak peeks!!

Welcome Clementine!

Congratulations are in order To Eric Reynolds of Fantagraphics and his wife Rhea Patton on the birth of their daughter, Clementine Bean, this past weekend!

Printer's Row Chicago

Catching up with some recent outings here and just like BEA I didn't go and I'm not giving Salomon blogging privileges so stop writing already (This means you, Jason Miles). Jamie and Chris went to Chicago for Printers Row--an outdoor book festival that was going on the same weekend as MoCCA Art Festival. Chicago--The Windy City, The City of Big Shoulders, The City of the Fish Hugging Man!

The iconic pile of books pre-show. Seriously, if you do cons, this image is seared into your mind. Are the boxes damaged? Are they all there? "Hey, let's just put some of these boxes on their side because who's gonna stop us." The day started off nice enough in sunny Chicago.

A mural celebrating the early printing--"The First Impression." I-guess-we-are-at-Printers-Row.

Chris Ware and Ivan Brunetti sign at the D+Q booth. Reports are that there were "mad crowds" and that the "peeps were buggin'" when they saw Chris and Ivan.

Ivan apologizes to a fan. He actually grabbed the book out of his hands and signed it before the fan could point out that he was there to meet "that guy who does the comic about Germany."

Those McSweeneys kids and their high concept retail operations! Pirate Shop, Ephemera Museum, Rock on Tarp.

Back at the booth, Chris Ware signs a postcard with a man hugging a fish.

"This one is about incest. He he. Sniff."

And then the skies opened up and ruined a perfectly nice day.

This is when Chris and Jamie left and saw a movie.

Jamie stayed behind to do some sight seeing. What's he reflected in?

In his words, "It's a giant silver ass!!"

And a trip to "North America's Second Best Comic Shop." Pictured, owner Eric Kirsammer and the guy who loaned Jamie a twenty so he could get some lunch but he still forgot his name.

Eric Thornton. Pretending to order more copies of What It Is.

Beautiful, spacious, second best. Oh wait, I think this is Quimbys. Third best.

A trip to Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art and a look at the Chris Hipkiss exhibit.

A detail from a piece that might be titled "We've Fallen in Love with Poppies."

The amazing Henry Darger apartment installation.

Lynda shops at Quimbys. I'm pretty sure it's Quimbys. It's been a while since I was last there.

Lynda on stage at The Hideout.

The line for Lynda's one-on-one chat and doodle.

Hunter. Ted. Awesome.

Attn: Toronto! Atwood, Galifianakis, Hefner, and Oliveros!

According to this schedule of events, the chief is at the Rosewater Supper Club in Toronto hobnobbing with likes of novelist Margaret Atwood, comedian Zach Galifianakis, publisher Christie Hefner and you know, award-winning scientists, the author of Love and Sex with Robots, astronomers, and astronauts and other people we don't normally cross paths with in our little humble world of comics.

He's at the ideaCity conference, and if he is not at the party, he is definitely in his hotel preparing his powerpoint show for Friday morning at 9:30, where he follows cartoonists Matthew Diffee and Ann Telnaes. And if he's not in his hotel, he's definitely taking photos of Chester's next project for this very blog. He promised!

Marc Bell is all for "granting"

His new blog has some befores-and-afters.

And of course, the Adam Baumgold Gallery has an amazing selection of images, as well.

Babies' Day Out, 2008 [AKA MoCCA Fest]

WE'RE ON IT.

Our time in New York began in with a relaxing 3 hour visit to the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, during which I got to go through all of our boxes to check the books for damage.

The US Postal Service may claim that neither sleet nor snow nor rain will get in the way of a package delivery, but apparently a New Jersey to New York delivery on a sunny day poses a bit of a problem.

New York has amazing comic stores, I mean, don't get me wrong, Capitaine Quebec... errr... carries comics, but it's no Rocketship, Jim Hanley's, Forbidden Planet or Desert Island (featured above). We also had a chance to visit St Marks, Giant Robot and Bookcourt, which were also totally awesome.

A What It Is collage courtesy of Forbidden Planet. Lynda Barry: perhaps the only cartoonist who is happy to see her books cut up and glued to a door.

Lynda Barry stands up to tell the crowd at The Strand that she does not need a microphone, she was, in fact, the loudest person on her block.

See how interested Lynda looks? I swear that we got about 30 photos like this. She is one of the most genuine and supportive people I have ever met, and inspired every person who got a book signed. It was incredible to watch. You can see more pictures of her on our Flickr photo stream if you don't believe me.

You think this photo is interesting? You should see what Art Spiegelman is looking at. MILDLY AMUSING.

Adrian Tomine gets adoring looks from fans. Well, one adoring look and one blank stare. We take what we can.

First time D+Q helper Daniella hangs back from the throngs in fear, but remembers wisely that sitting isn't selling.

Evidence of the Great Fire of 2008, AKA Lynda Barry signs books on an NYC dumpster.

With old man Devlin back in Montreal, we were free to sit on books and eat candy in the airport until we got sick. FINALLY.

Don't worry Alison, convention season isn't over. San Diego is only 6 weeks away...
