This weekend comics fans in the Selkirk Mountains, on Kootenay Lake in Southern British Columbia wil be treated to the Elephant Mountain Literary Festival where on Saturday D+Q Managing Editor will be appearing with REUNION cartoonist Pascal Girard. Pascal Girard and Tracy Hurren of Drawn & Quarterly Press discuss the graphic novel's place in the literary canon. Girard, a graphic artist and writer working in French and English, will describe how he approaches his craft. How does he draw his map, and by which path does he approach his work? As Managing Editor, what role does Hurren have in the writer’s process?
1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Maps, Detours, and Roadblocks
MG Vassanji, Camilla Gibb, Terry Fallis, and Pascal Girard discuss the map to their work. What paths have they taken? What were the detours or roadblocks? How do they arrive at their final destinations, and is it ever truly final? Listen to these award-winning authors discuss influences and approaches to their work.
3:30 p.m.- 5:00 p.m. Publishing in Peril?
Howard White, Kristin Cochrane, and Tracy Hurren discuss what publishing means today. As big publishers merge and grow ever larger, small presses are emerging at a fast pace and the industry is changing in ways some say have not been seen since Gutenberg. Added to the mix is self-publishing, which erases former barriers to entering the market. Do we need the major publishers as gatekeepers? What is their role for readers and writers? And finally, what is the role of the small press and self-publishing in the future of publishing?
Evening Reading: Paths to the Page: Writing the Map (Part 2)
Internationally recognized novelists Camilla Gibb (The Beauty of Humanity Movement) and John Lent (The Path to Ardroe) read from their works. Joining them will be graphic novelist Pascal Girard, who will be projecting and reading from a few pages from his 2011 book REUNION, and discussing his inspirations and creative process. Come out and enjoy a no-host bar and a selection of coffee, tea, and appetizers as you listen to these wonderful authors.
