SDCC 08 (Friday)

We're back home from San Diego now and catching up on sleep and work. It's safe to say that this was our most profitable and generally successful Comic Con yet. Long lines for Lynda, Adrian, and Rutu (thanks to everyone who came to get their books signed) and sell-outs for half a dozen books. The folks running the Con were amazingly helpful in every regard and I was constantly astonished by how attentive and well organized they were. And calm. So special thanks to Jackie and Janet (who I dealt with in person during the show) and all the other people on staff who made this the smoothest SDCC D+Q has ever done.

Alison and Rebecca start the day with a new attitude.

Oh, that's why.

Two days in and Rebecca is self-medicating.

Alvin Buenaventura rockin' it Mile-End stylee! (Jordan Rae and Carlene also pictured.)

Matt Groening says THIS IS THE BOOK OF THE SHOW!

I can't describe how much fun I had hanging out with Rutu and Yirmi. Rutu's presentation was a highlight for me this year at SDCC.

Poetry!

So maybe there's a certain Minx writer named Cecil who used to live in Montreal and years ago made a movie featuring our own Jamie Salomon...

NAY-KED!!!! {IT's true and, Cecil, please youtube,}

Prince Namor walking out of the bathroom at the convention center. This dude is barefoot. BAREFOOT-IN-THE-BATHROOM-AT-THE-CONVENTION-CENTER!!!

Tom Kenny of Spongebob Squarepants embarrasses us all by 1) staying at the booth too long talking about Gasoline Alley and 2) telling Anne Iishi (right) that she's his "con crush."

Kristy Valenti, the most powerful woman in Seattle.

I'm told the highlight of the graphic novel panel featuring Rutu and Adrian was when Rutu wrestled the mic away from Eddie "My Life in Comics" Campbell.

"The Kids" go out for dinner. Dash Shaw, Zak Sally, and Jordan Crane guest star.

Okay, to be fair I just learned how to text. FUNEM. SVFM. FUNEX. SVFX. LOL.

This is our world. Gary Groth on a giant screen. Reading a hilarious speech from Barry Windsor-Smith.

Ann Marie Fleming and Rutu handing out awards at the Eisners. Note to Jackie: Give poor Bill Morrison a break. David Cross and Seth Rogan are BIG comic nerds--ask one or both of them to host next year. I am not kidding.

James Sturm doodles on the program during the three and one half hour ceremony.

And then he wins for Satchel Paige. It was kind of a surprise to us all and a pretty nice moment so close to the end of the night. Congrats to Rich Tomasso as well.

And THEN Rutu wins and gives a really sweet speech thanking her friend Yirmi and our publisher Chris Oliveros. Did I need a thank you from the stage? No, I did not. Look it was late and the lights are bright and people can be a little forgetful. I get it. It's not a big deal . I don't do it for the thank yous and accolades.

I don't.

Sniff.
