Sure, why not read an eight page article on Jimmy Cagney?

Boy, Google alerts are great. You find the craziest stuff. Here's an article on the great actor Jimmy Cagney living on Martha's Vineyard and his life there. How does this relate to comics. Only in the smallest way. He was friends with the great cartoonist Denys Wortman. The met in NYC at the famous Players club and when Jimmy talked about needing to get away from the hustle and bustle of celebrity life, Denys recommended that her try out his place on Martha's Vineyard to see how he liked it. And it went from there. Here's Denys son recalling those days:
“There was no phone and no electricity,” Denny recalls, “but Jimmy fell in love with our house on Middle Road. He loved rural life and horses, so the Vineyard was perfect.” Finding an available property nearby, Jimmy purchased it in 1936.

The full article is here. Like I said, there's very little real comics content. Just some interesting details of a small part of Denys' non-cartooning life.

CHESTER BROWN ON CBC Q, TODAY at 10 AM EDT

In anticipation of this Sunday's Toronto launch of PAYING FOR IT at Goodhandy's, the 5/3 release of the book in Canada and the 5/10 release of the book in the US, Chester Brown is on CBC Q With Jian Gomeshi today. Sure to be a classic interview, do not miss the first time Chester speaks in public on about his stunning book.

Adrian Tomine on NPr's Tell Me More

Check out this link on NPR's Tell Me More for an interview with Adrian Tomine! Adorable!

Seth, Chester, and others do some tool talk

This is quite simply probably the best pre-con promo video I have ever seen! Way to go, TCAF!

Princesses & Prostitutes

Oh I know, all I talk about lately is Chester, Chester, Chester. But what about my authors who do believe in romantic love? Here we are one day before one of the biggest events in the western hemisphere. The royal wedding! While I can't think of any North American comparison (sorry, Chelsea), across the ocean, Adrian Tomine's British publisher is tickled pink (or perhaps the tiffany blue of the cover) over the timing of Adrian's latest book. The Guardian UK even excerpted this month as part of their month long wedding coverage, featured in Design Week and more.

Here they interview Adrian for the Faber blog where he lets out this AWESOME gem: "I’m pretty sure I’ve never referred to myself as a ‘graphic novelist’. And if I do, please come and put me out of my pretentious misery."

Here's a review in the List:"{a} quaint indie sensibility...drives...this tiny gem of a book."

Stateside Adrian checked in with both his neighborhood newspaper the Park Slope Patch as well as NPR's Tell Me More. I'll post the link to audio to the NPR as soon as I have it!

Another Month of Shapton

And they're all just so good! Leanne Shapton brings us a month of Wednesday patterns. Most of them are textile-based, which makes this one particularly charming:

But seriously folks, if you've missed the first few, it's worth spending a few minutes of your work day gawping at these beautiful images.

$12,500 in 9 minutes!

Our Japan fundraising effort was a success--Adrian's prints sold out in 9 minutes! Thanks to all those who purchased prints. For those that missed out, you can still donate to this worthy cause here (you just won't receive these gorgeous prints in return).

Sikoryak does Jerry Robinson!

R Sikoryak has a cartoon in this week's New Yorker, part of a profile on the legendary cartoonist Jerry Robinson, who inked, lettered and brainstormed alongside fellow greats like Jack Kirby and Joe Shuster.

Acme Novelty 20 review

The Point Magazine's newest issue features an in-depth profile of Chris Ware's oeuvre:

"To read and to see Ware’s comics is to behold a totally new way of thinking and seeing, of telling stories and expressing ideas. Comics are a timely medium for the kind of culture we live in today, especially with regard to our inundation by visual information. But Ware also seems to have figured out how to bring together two typically opposed forms of modern storytelling, one form that’s spare and objective like The Sun Also Rises, and one that’s excessive and subjective like The Sound and the Fury."

ON SALE HERE APRIL 27, 2011 at 12:00 PM (EASTERN DAYLIGHT TIME)

My Coworkers Are Awesome!

The librairie is featured in the Montreal Gazette today. Writer Sarah Gilbert captures the very essence of what we are trying to achieve with the store. I especially like the following quotes from my coworker Julia:

"We know books. We love them, and we sell more of them that way," said bookseller Julia Pohl-Miranda.

Is she talking about suggestive selling, along the lines of 'Would you like fries with that?'

"It's more like, 'These fries are delicious! I ate them for breakfast and lunch and dinner!' " corrected Pohl-Miranda, who recently devoured and recommended Great House by Nicole Krauss.

In the picture are the store's star employees Julia Pohl-Miranda, Julien Ceccaldi and Rory Seydel.

Marc Bell and Jim Woodring this Saturday

I think the poster says it all more or less, but know that the signing is taking place in Houston at Domy Books, 1709 Westheimer, between 6 and 8 pm on Saturday April 23. And it's free and open to the public!

RSVP on Facebook and find out more details.

Plus, on Friday night, Jim will be demonstrating his giant pen (seven feet long! complete with giant nib and inkwell sized to match!) in action at the Lawndale Art Center.

Congrats to Jeet & Robin (another chance to blog about babies)

Congratulations to Jeet Heer and his wife Robin Ganev, on the birth of their daughter Bella Elinor Heer, who came into the world yesterday and weighs 6lbs and 3 ozs. I'm sure there is a comic reference to her name and I just haven't thought of it. Just gives me another excuse to daydream about babies for a few more hours.

Tonight!! Marc Bell and Jim Woodring

In a perfect world there would be lines around the block for this exhibition, Walpurgis Afternoon, curated by Mr. Robert Boyd. One can only hope! Either way, if you're in the Houston area you should go see this. Both Marc Bell and Jim Woodring will be in attendance and I swear to gawd you'll never meet two more down to earth artists who deal in psychedelic images (of a sort). Both great gentlemen. Get down there and shake the hands of genuine geniuses!!

Roy Freeman talks about his dad

Back when we were doing Don Freeman's Skitzy, I did a bunch of research on the man but I didn't have the good fortune to see this series of personal remembrances (1, 2, 3, 4) from his son Roy. Really fantastic personal stuff about the relationship between a boy and his very famous dad. I would recommend bookmarking the site ( Vintage Children's Books My Kid Loves) that hosted these remembrances. It's really great. The author Burgin Streetman digs deep into kids books with lots of pics. Anyone who has kids knows that there are lousy, good, and truly transcendent kids books out there and many are lost to time. Streetman is performing a service!

Over Easy chapter one!

In the mail today, 106 pages of Mimi Pond's Over Easy. This is just chapter one! Mimi expects that the final book will be around 500-700 pages. I'm trying not to do the math. I'm just letting the pages come in as they want.

Back to work, Mimi!! Stop baking things that require both sweetened condensed milk and unsweetened condensed milk and orange blossom water!

Mizuki! Shigeru!

Dan Nadel has posted a preview of Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths at The Comics Journal. He's also done a great job of contextualizing the semi-autobiographical story:

"It is, like Jacques Tardi’s It Was the War in the Trenches, an alternately furious, humorous, and horrifying story. [...] Onward… is particularly affecting because from page one we know that the troops will die. They were sent only to fight and die, and freed of any conventional will-they-survive narrative, Mizuki gently chronicles the daily physical lives of these men."

Don't dillydally - the preview will only be available for the next week!

Over at The Manga Curmudgeon, David Welsh has this to say: "Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths has numerous merits in its own right beyond being part of Mizuki’s body of work." That's high praise indeed given Mizuki's status as a "giant of manga" (in Dan Nadel's words), and a "legendary mangaka" (in David Welsh's).

Onward... will be available in stores next week.

Hello Wisconsin!

Lynda Barry will be a featured guest today AND tonight, Wednesday April 20th at the Fox Cities Book Festival.

Right now (noon) she's presenting a talk at the UW-Fox Valley, and tonight at 7 pm you can find her at the Appleton Public Library (225 North Oneida Street in Appleton). Don't miss this, good people of Wisconsin! Lynda Barry's presentations are joyful, powerful learning experiences.

Day 3!

Pascal Girard's diary from the MoCCA festival continues today, complete with photographic evidence and airport porn.

Read the whole thing here.

Tove! {Too-vah!}

I caught this from a Dylan Horrocks tweet between his complaints about US politics and New Zealand politics {Dylan , GET BACK TO WORK!!}. A Tove Jansson mini-site. Now, I'm no expert but this site is a wealth of information with tons of photos and lots of her paintings. Really something.

Tonight! D+Q in Malmo

Tonight is the vernissage for FAMILY SHIRT, a group show in Malmo featuring numerous D+Q artists and friends.

Check out this sweet lineup:
Jason Mclean, Marc Bell, Amy Lockhart, Les Ramsay, Neil Farber and Michael Dumontier, Jaret Penner, Mark Delong, Simon Redekop, Jay Isaac, James Kirkpatrick, Jamie Q, Beau Labute, Peter Thompson, Jeff Ladouceur, Darrin MacAdam, and Matthew Feyld.

Unfortunately I don't read Swedish, but if you do, here are some more event details.

Pascal and Joe: the bromance continues

Day 2 of Pascal Girard's Cartoonist's Diary is up and today's episode features Pascal's tourmate (and fellow D+Q author) Joe Ollmann.

I love how Pascal has opted to use profiles of D+Q artists as a template by which to format his Cartoonist's Diary. WHO'S NEXT??

Strandicon (video of some sweet cartoonists)

Congrats to Sonja Ahlers on her Sobey Art Award Nom!

Fantastic news! The long list for the 2011 Sobey Art Awards have been announced and petit livre artist and THE SELVES artist/author Sonja Ahlers is one of the lucky 25 nominees for the prestigious Canadian prize. Let's hope she makes the short list which will be announced this May.

Vanessa explains Seder to us all.

Vanessa has a new comics column up at Tablet. Honestly, I don't believe half of this stuff but I'm afraid to ask if she's making it up.

Pascal goes to MOCCA (and all eyes are on Brecht.)

Pascal Girard was one of the many D+Q artists at MOCCA last weekend and fortunately for the rest of us, over at TCJ.com, he has documented the libertine antics of one Brecht Evens. This is one of my fave new features of the new TCJ. {And, Heidi, I will respectfully disagree.}

Yeah, it's pretty big.

Well, looks like Big Questions wins. Here's a dummy copy of the hardcover edition stacked up with the thickest books I could find around this joint. It's got them all beat.

And here it is on the bible stand--WHERE IT BELONGS--along with the softcover proof.

And lastly, production intern Shannon, who seemed pretty thrilled to be holding such a beautiful cover in her hands.

You need to up your game, Brad MacKay!!

Apparently, Seth thinks that Brad MacKay can't dress himself. As I recall he did wear a Notre Dame hoodie and cargo shorts to last year's Doug Wright Awards.
{Snagged from Tom Spurgeon at The Comics Reporter.}

The Making of Tatsumi

Lo and behold, looked what turned up in my google alerts today, a very thinly veiled advertisement for HP that is ALSO a 5 minute feature on the animation of A DRIFTING LIFE! Yes! News is that it will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. This video made me so happy for Tatsumi.

Here's an interview with the director Eric Khoo in Time Out Singapore, about how he got Tatsumi to give him the rights to do the film. His story is very similar about how Adrian went to Japan to ask Tatsumi for D+Q to reprint his comics, and Tatsumi having read PressPop's Sleepwalk, instantly felt a connection with Adrian and said yes. It seems like Khoo is trying very hard to keep the film authentic, right down to Tatsumi's okanese accent.

Now I just have to figure out to convince the Chief to send me and Adrian to Cannes for the premiere.

Lynda Barry & Alison Bechdel in Conversation at Wellesley

Holy Crap! Lynda and Alison in conversation? If you can't make tonight's event at Wellesley and I can't imagine how anyone in the Boston area would miss this event, but if you do miss it, say like you have a funeral, wedding or birth to go to, then read this interview with Lynda in the Phoenix. I've read every single interview with Lynda from the past decade, and I love it when a new one surfaces where the reporter gets Lynda to spills her guts. Because Lynda spilling her guts is awesome!

Joe and Pascal at Lucky's in Vancouver

Join Pascal Girard and Joe Ollmann at Lucky's (3972 Main St.) today, Friday April 15th at 7 pm. Each has a new D+Q book! Pascal will be discussing Reunion (a semi-autobiographical story about coming to terms with high school conceptions of coolness) and Joe will talk about Mid-Life (also semi-autobiographical, but this time a portrait of a mid-life crisis brought on by an infatuation with a children's performer). Both are wry, self-deprecating humorists of the first class, as well as talented artists.

Don't miss it!

This is pretty nerd-y even for me.

I can't even quite figure what's going on here but from what I can glean from walking past booths at WonderCon there is a new Simon Pegg movie featuring the above cover as a prop. It would appear that Dan Clowes has finally made it in Hollywood.

Triple Threat!

Tonight! In Toronto! A D+Q Trifecta!

Join Pascal Girard (Reunion), Joe Ollmann (Mid-Life), Zach Worton (The Klondike), and the good people of the Beguiling at this launch for three brand new D+Q titles! The artists will be on hand to sign your books, answer your questions, and give you a little insight into their work.

The launch is happening at Clinton's Tavern, which is on Bloor at Clinton, one block east of Christie subway station. Head on down to 693 Bloor St. West for 7 pm tonight, Thursday April 14th.

MoCCA 2011 (Drinks on Gary Groth)

Huh? What? This has nothing to do with MoCCA!!!! Au contraire, mon frere. (How's my french?!) that is just Gigi sleeping with her YEAH comics and underneath Krazy (Rebecca doing her best Gilbert) in crazy anticipation of her collected YEAH when I told her I was bringing it back signed by Mr Bagge himself for her this weekend.

Oh but who is this little cutie you ask? Just Miss Nora Tomine. Cutest little girl in all of Park Slope. Cute enough to make me want another. Now that's cute. JUST JOKING TOM. (not)

From the slope, I head over to Carroll Gardens to talk "digital strategy" with Dan Nadel. He "allowed" me to enter PBHQ and I met his fabulous intern Molly. Really, I had to beg.

Oh, and I met Mr. Fatty. I mean he's cute, Dan, but he doesn't make me want to get a dog.

The real work started on Friday when all of my artists arrived at the Strand for a taste of NYC. This is Joe, Pascal, the always gracious and delightful Francoise Mouly and Jillian Tamaki.

Brecht Evens, Joe Ollmann, Pascal Girard and Ben Katchor. Apparently, Brecht and Ben are old friends. Who knew!

This is what I like to do, people, as soon as my authors get off the plane, I IMMEDIATELY put them to work. MAKE THOSE COMICS!

Francoise and Leigh Stein of Toon Books.

Pascal meeting Kim Deitch, who showed up to his Comics Journal panel three hours early, much to our delight and benefit. Kim told me he is working on a new book.

It's never hard to tell Bob to get to work, he's always working it!

Fan moment for all of us at D+Q: Ben walks over to Kim with a vintage book and they proceed to discuss it in detail. Swoon.

The window display at the Strand, one of the reasons it is the best bookstore in the world!

On our way to dinner, we meet Brian "Crosshatch" Heater and Sarah Morean. Brian did a great job on the programming this year and was as nice and friendly as ever.

On Friday night, we head out for dinner with Publisher's Weekly Calvin Reid and his wife Jody. Calvin and I bored everyone with our "remember when" stories. Sorry peeps, that's just how it is.

Afterwards, we went to Desert Island to say hi to Peter Bagge. Pete's the best.

as well as Gabrielle Bell! Gab was kind enough to carry on the evening with Joe, Pascal and Brecht as I had to go home to "rest my voice." But the night did not end for our D+Q cartoonists. Maybe next time I won't ask Gab to "babysit".

First run-in with a cop by a D+Q artist EVER. Europeans! You are NOT allowed to drink on the street in North America! Scheisse! Merde! Kakken! Hey, we don't make the laws.

And the next day, OK listen here D+Q cartoonists, Joe and Pascal know how to treat their poor poor publishers who are on their feet for 12 hours slinging comics. They brought us coffee, baked goods, and on Sunday cleaned the booth for us before we got there! A++++++.

Leon Avelino of Secret Acres strikes a pose.

Now this little girl was the cutest, sweetest person at the show with the best rehearsed pitch EVER. She came up, introduced herself as Emma T. Capps, explained to me that she is a 14 year old cartoonist who had the Gold Medal at the 2011 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. She then asked if she could give me a submission of comics, buttons and postcards. As if the poise and moxie aren't enough, she is a damn fine cartoonist in her own right. We will be hearing much more from Emma.

11:15 AM on Saturday, three copies of PAYING FOR IT left.

Two more soon-to-be-convention-sell-outs, SCENES and WRONG PLACE.

Now this was a treat, Adrian's British editor from Faber & Faber was in town, Angus Cargill, and we were able to meet and chat. He's a very big fan of Adrian, and it was very sweet to see.

WFMU'sToo Much Information's Ben Walker and his friend Mathilde. Ben's show is being picked up by a few public radio stations, and will soon be big, I say...

How about Jessica's fancy new banner she designed? Gorgeous.

I'm pretty sure Ben is extolling the virtues of the wacom tablet to Adrian.

Adrian had a line his entire two hours. But he had one book left at the end!

Gabrielle, Joe and Pascal catching up from the night before.

It was a treat to meet Danish cartoonist Rikke Bakman of the comic GLIMT.

Ladies and gentlemen, the man of the weekend, Brecht Evens.

Meeting of the minds: Bill K, Chris Mautner and Jog.

Who is this? Only my favorite lady in all of comics, Janice Headley!!!!

Gahan Wilson and Gary Groth.

Gary Lieb, Michael Kupperman and Charles Burns.

"Kudos to my fellow libertarian Chester Brown."

Former D+Q staffer Alison Naturale. Alison come back!

Pascal and his soon to be convention sell out REUNION.

Joe extolling the virtues of drinking whiskey while inking to Adrian.

Mr. Mazzuchelli, perhaps my favorite person to see at MoCCA! He's just so darn happy and friendly! Always a treat.

Oh my gosh MORE CUTENESS! Say hi to Ramona and her mama Lauren Weinstein. Cutest little girl in New Jersey. Cute enough to make want another. BABY ON THE BRAIN!

Watching Brecht Evens watercolor during his signing is amazing.

Adrian working overtime, signing that last copy.

More Brecht. DAMN!

See how charming Brecht is? He has Jessica under his complete control. To his right is the fabulous Nicole Rudick and Adrian at our Saturday night dinner.

See, Joe and Pascal...UNDER BRECHT'S CONTROL.

Is Charles? Hells no, you have to be pretty darn magnetic to get the author of BLACK HOLE under your thumb. Next to Charles is Gary Lieb.

Damn you Brecht Evens, damn you!

And off to the Comics Journal soiree at the White Slab Palace on the LES, affectionately recoined for the evening by Gary Lieb as "White Slob Palace" for obvious reasons. Here's Gary talking to Marc Newgarden who swears he is working on that NANCY book. He swears!

Finally, I get to meet the elusive Rachel Uffner, proprietress of the esteemed contemporary art gallery of the same name. Oh, and I guess I should mention the BETTER half of Dan. Ha ha! Below them is Naomi Fry, whose contributions to TCJ I can't wait to read!

TCJ review Tucker Stone, and co-editor Tim Hodler. Tucker Stone has an outsized personality to match his soap opera name! I kid *sort of* I was very happy to meet him.

Had a nice chat with hopefully paid Voice contributor Richard Gehr.

How awesome is Janice? Her happiness is darn well contagious. My #1 convention goal this year is to be able to hang out with Janice at a show for longer than 5 minutes.

Yup, who is that there with Gary Groth, none other than Gahan Wilson. How much does that rule that Gahan came to the party? It rules, and everyone was pretty happy he was there, but maybe everyone was just a smidge more happy that Gary bought everyone drinks that night. I'M NOT LYING!!!! DRINKS ON GARY GROTH!

That's a lot of people to buy drinks for. As Gary Lieb said something to the effect of: "Dinner on D+Q? Drinks on Fanta? How things change in 20 years!"

Not too many photos on Sunday, apologies. My retailers came out to say hi. My dearest retailer in all of comics, Jeff Ayers of Forbidden Planet, who shared with me his plans to take over lower Manhattan, and I feel better now. And Tucker Stone and Amy Adams of the fine South Brooklyn establishment Bergen Street Comics.

This is me taking a photo of our booth around 5:00 PM with an hour to go, and yup, we are pretty proud of this empty table affair. Because there is nothing worst that schlepping boxes of unsold books after a con. Proud to say we had nothing left over! How did this happen? It's not luck, nor magic, Jessica and I have been honing our convention science for a good four years, and we are rocking it lately. Until TCAF....Now where's Tom...
