Dan Zettwoch (Favorite Self-portrait of the moment.)

I don't think it's a secret that one of my favorite cartoonist's blogs belongs to Dan Zettwoch. It's filled with tons of behind the scenes work--things you would normally never see unless you hang out with Dan--like his illustration work or birth announcements or whatever. And he often breaks down his process. This seems like a good time since I'm talking about Dan to mention a couple of things that I think make him such an interesting cartoonist. Dan doesn't really come from the same kind of underground sensibility as a lot of other alternative cartoonists today. He doesn't seem to be working out demons. Dan's approach harkens back to a kind of romantic working commercial artist ideal. His work exudes a kind of casual manliness--a man who loves to bowl, eat fried food, hang out with his pals drawing hot rods. A man who has hobbies--good old-fashioned hobbies like building model cars or launching model rockets or building things in the garage. I swear to god this guy should have his own all Dan Zettwoch issue of Popular Mechanics! Um, end of love letter. Please move along.
