Rutu Modan, Mimi Pond, Gilbert Hernandez bring home the gold!

It's Monday, and Comic-Con 2014 is already over. Montreal is rainy and cold to welcome Tracy, Jade, and Julia home-- this ain't California, that's for sure. I'd be bummed, but I'm too darn proud of RUTU MODAN, MIMI POND, and GILBERT HERNANDEZ to be unhappy.

Rutu Modan scooped up a 'Best Graphic Album- New' Eisner Award for her stunning book, The Property. Above is a panel from the book I am constantly showing off to friends, customers, and strangers alike, in moments of LOOK-AT-HOW-BEAUTIFUL-THIS-IS passion. Below is Tracy accepting the award on Rutu's behalf at Friday night's ceremony.

The Washington Post has an interview with Rutu up about her win. In it Rutu says "When I saw the e-mail from my publisher, I jumped up yelling... And danced in the living room with my surprised son." I never had any doubt The Property would win the prize, but I feel like dancing too! Especially because we've got two other winning authors in the house:

Here's Mimi Pond signin' and smilin' with her Inkpot Award for achievement in comics! Mimi was in the biz long before we published Over Easy this spring, and it seems she's just getting better and better. I can hardly wait for the second volume of her semi-autobiographical graphic novel (!)

Image via

Also honoured were Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez- can you believe these were their first Eisner Awards? Nope, me either. Gilbert won 'Best Short Story' for his work in ongoing series Love and Rockets.

Bravo, all! And stay tuned for our full Comic-Con recap coming soon!

Let's all just go back to TCAF for a minute….

Here's Kate Beaton, Lynn Johnston, and Raina Telgemeier's kick-off talk for this year's TCAF, in all its almost two hours of glory. Need I really say more??? Happy Friday, y'all.

Mimi Pond and Vanessa Davis host ICON8! And NEW Mimi Pond event in Chattanooga, TN!

Portland's ICON8 Illustration Conference is in full swing! Like always, ICON8 is bringing together top illustrators, designers, and publishers from around the globe for a weekend of panels, workshops, and presentations. But this year is going to be way more fun than any other, because Mimi Pond and Vanessa Davis are hosting the whole she-bang! These two are hilarious, and full of good stories, and I'm really bummed to be missing them emcee. If you're one of the lucky ones able to be there this weekend (the conference is sold out), be sure have Mimi and Vanessa sign copies of their books tomorrow, Saturday July 12th, in the Kridel Lobby outside of the Portland Museum of Art Auditorium . The signing begins at 12:45 pm!

And if you weren't able to make ICON8, fret not. We're happy to announce a brand new date on Mimi Pond's Over Easy tour: she will be presenting and signing at Winder Binder in Chattanooga, Tennessee on Monday, August 18th, at 7pm. Get on over there!

Hey Guelph! Have you seen Seth hangin' downtown?

This banner of Seth and his artwork, that is! The city of Guelph has decided to honour its local artists by hanging their portraits alongside their works from the streetlights on downtown Quebec Street. Amazing! I hope to see initiatives like this in more towns. If you're in Guelph or planning to visit, these artists will be smiling down on you until October.

And while we're appreciating Seth, The Washington Post recently shared a 're-appreciation' of Palookaville 21 as part of their Shelfies series. The piece includes a wonderful interview with Seth, in which he discusses narrative choices made in Nothing Lasts (its opening page is pictured above), fictional histories, his many plans for future projects, and more. I suggest you read it!

Asphalt Watches on Demand

We've mentioned it before but remember that odd amazing little book we did a couple of years ago called Stooge Pile? Of course you do. Well, Seth Scriver, the inspired hoser behind that book, recently made a full-length cartoon movie with his friend Shayne Ehman called Asphalt Watches and it is finally on Vimeo On Demand and you should git on over there and watch it. $5 for a movie in yer living room. Come on, you paid for Veronica Mars the first weekend it was out you can handle this. And it will open your head and put ideas in there. People, this movie won the Best First Canadian Feature Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, what else do you need to know?

Art Spiegelman curates a piece in the latest Artforum!

Folks, the latest issue of Artforum is unreal, and is specially catered to you, comics fans. For this special cartooning issue, Artforum asked none other than the master himself, Art Spiegelman, to curate a selection of his favourite comics. His piece, "Eye of Doom, Hand of Glory" opens with the announcement that "the future of comics is in its past" and goes on to explore his varied influences.

Spiegelman speaks of the "invisible hidden in plain sight" and the "arc of a cartoonist's style". He namedrops Stan Drake, Chester Gould, Shigeru Sugiura, and Frank King, amongst others. People, if you're hoping to become a succesful cartoonist, or if you just love the art form, Spiegelman's advice is some of the soundest you can subscribe to. Do yourself a favour and check it out!

As though that brilliant bit wasn't enough, this issue also features a long-form piece by Stephen Burt on the histories of comics, in which he mentions lots of our favourite people, including Lynda Barry, Chris Ware, and Gilbert Hernandez, and some of our very own titles, like Lynda's The Freddie Stories , Daniel Clowes's The Death-Ray , and Dylan Horrocks's Hicksville .

There's also a wonderful profile of Julie Doucet: "Doucet is central to our understanding of comics as a particularly vibrant platform for telling and showing women's stories". Yeah!

Last but certainly not least, we'd like to mention how freakin' proud we are of our former Librairie store staffer (!!!), Julien Ceccaldi, for snagging the cover of this fantastic issue. We're all starry-eyed and inspired over here. I think I might keep this Artforum on my coffee table forever so I always have a ready opportunity to talk my unsuspecting guests's ears off about comics. Because I totally don't already do that.

Hey, Norway: Oslo Comics Expo is this weekend!

In stores now: BENSON's CUCKOOS by Anouk Ricard

I don't think I've ever met anyone, young or old, who doesn't fall in love at first sight with Anouk Ricard's smart-alecky Anna and Froga series. And while those books are technically for children, we've got good news for adult fans- Anouk Ricard's latest, Benson's Cuckoos, is just for you and in stores now!

Benson's Cuckoos is both a whodunnit and office comedy, set at a cuckoo-clock factory. Despite the interview being less than conventional, duck-billed Richard is happy to have found work, and ignores the office's shortcomings- like its dead fish, or being asked to provide his own computer. But soon,

things spiral out of control, and the weirdness becomes unignorable.

Mr. Benson is never without a wild hat and calls surprise meetings like they're pop quizzes. None of office workers are in the least bit helpful, and if asked about George, the lion Richard is replacing, they'll invent elaborate lies or begin crying. Richard's psychiatrist is useless. No one, no one, gets any work done.

Perplexed and anxious, Richard becomes determined to find out what happened to the missing George, all while trying to woo the company's receptionist and maintain a sense of order in his working life. Obviously, hilarity ensues.

Like in Anna and Froga, Anouk's brightly-coloured classic panels are punctuated with washy, surreal dreamscapes. Benson's Cuckoos is as good-lookin' as it is funny, with lovably dim-witted characters that are completely unforgettable. From Publishers Weekly : "[Benson's Cuckoos] is like a fever dream of workplace anxiety drawn by Richard Scarry for those worn down by the business grind... Those who’ve worked office jobs with self-important, rude, or clueless coworkers (and who hasn’t?) will appreciate the satire."

So what's keeping you? Pick up a copy and join the cuckoos!

In stores now: PETTY THEFT by Pascal Girard and EVERYWHERE ANTENNAS by Julie Delporte!

This week we're welcoming a beautiful pair of titles from two of our hometown heroes: Petty Theft by Pascal Girard and Everywhere Antennas by Julie Delporte!

Because Pascal and Julie are French speakers, we felt their books absolutely needed French flaps.

Petty Theft is set in Montreal's Mile End, and more specifically in a fictionalized version of our very own Librairie Drawn and Quarterly. Like in his previous Reunion, Petty Theft features an alternate-universe version of Pascal and is a comedy of errors you can't stop reading, no matter how badly he embarrasses himself. In Petty Theft, a down-on-his-luck Pascal catches a girl stealing a copy of his own book and decides to play detective, because an injury has prevented him from his favourite passtime, running. You'll find yourself cheering (and sometimes cringing) for this unlikely hero.

“Girard’s fluid and simple but immensely expressive cartooning enlivens Pascal’s increasingly ridiculous plans and sexual daydreams, and his cartoon self is a celebration of sheepish absurdity… Girard’s overanxious and wired protagonist will draw quirky comparisons to Seinfeld’s George Constanza and Woody Allen, and his breezy, evocative cartooning creates its own distinctive vision.”

Publishers Weekly Starred Review

Everywhere Antennas is an absolutely beautiful book, done in gorgeous pencil crayons like most of Julie's work. It's formatted as the diary of an unnamed narrator who has a very rare, and very misunderstood, sensitivity to the radiation emitted by everyday technology. Faced with a nervous breakdown, the narrator moves to the countryside (there are a number of amazing landscapes in this book) and tries to find a cure for both her disease and her sadness. Everywhere Antennas is heartbreaking, but also hopeful.

"Everywhere Antennas is written as the narrator's diary, and it's a combination of her penciled thoughts (done in beautiful, colored cursive writing) and her drawing and sketches... The story gains depth by tapping into larger social concepts like the refusal of modernity and an attraction to idealistic wishes for having a more simple life, if only for a brief period of time. Everywhere Antennas is fairly simple, but the way it leaves itself open to interpretation gives it its power." —A.V. Club

Montreal, show some local love: You'll have an opportunity to pick up a copy of each of these beautiful lil' books and have them signed this weekend (Friday, May 30th-Sunday, June 1st) in Parc La Fontaine at the Festival de BD de Montreal . Head on over to the 211 blog for our full programming schedule!

Chester Brown covers Maggie McNeill's new book!

Chester rarely takes on any freelancer art, so when he does it is a treat! Here is his cover to the book LADIES OF THE NIGHT by Honest Courtesan, Maggie McNeill.

Hey, NYC! Catch Mimi Pond tonight at McNally Jackson

Hey there, New York! The amazing Mimi Pond is heading straight from TCAF to you, or rather, to McNally Jackson, where you should be tonight. That's right: Mimi Pond will be at McNally Jackson for Over Easy tonight, Monday, May 12th, at 7 pm.

Mimi will be joined in conversation by Lisa Birnbach (True Prep), and will present a slideshow with a signing to follow. You could definitely use some Mimi in your Monday: here's the Facebook event.

Over Easy sold out at TCAF, is in its second week on the New York Times Best Sellers list of hardcover graphic fiction, and continues to receive well-deserved rave reviews:

"Pond recalls her youthful grunt work and floundering love affairs with such wry, observant nuance that she imparts a poignant sense of glamour to that run-down world of dive bars, thrift shops and cherished greasy spoons." The Globe and Mail

"Stocked to the brim with colourful characters, from the waitresses living out their women’s-lib lives with a rotating cast of boyfriends, to the caustic cooks who write poetry when they’re not flipping eggs, the Imperial is the kind of sandpaper-y place that hones artistic ideals into the tools necessary to start picking apart life." National Post

Be sure to check out her recent interviews with AM New York and with Village Voice, who call Over Easy "clever [and] warm-hearted". I had the pleasure of meeting Mimi in person this weekend and believe me, she always has a great story to tell— come hear a few tonight!

In honor of this, why not whip up a Hanawalt-inspired recipe and treat yourself to a re-read of My Dirty Dumb Eyes ? Winter is officially over and I think we could all use the laugh.

Free Comic Book Day, 2014!

Oh Joy! Our brand new FREE COMIC BOOK DAY issue is in! This lil' beaut features an excerpt from Shigeru Mizuki's second volume of Showa: A History of Japan, covering the period from 1944 to 1956.

And talk about coincidence, it's Mizuki's 92nd birthday today! HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIZUKI! Look at that smile, what a cutie!

Now don't go thinking Showa is anything like a boring ol' history textbook, oh no! With compassion and wit, Mizuki gives us a first hand account of this turbulent time, recounting his own experiences from when he was drafted into the army as a young (and sometimes lazy) teen. Never lazy when it comes to food though! Here he is trying to open up a can of delicious pineapple using his thumb:

And getting a final farewell from friends and family:

Mark your calendars, Free Comic Book Day is on Saturday, May 3rd. In the meantime, why not reminisce a little by looking back at last year's FCBD extravaganza! Nothing better than hyper kids getting their grubby little hands on free comics and snacks, right?

Toronto: Diane Obomsawin will be at The Henhouse tonight for On Loving Women

Hello, Toronto! Diane Obomsawin will be at The Henhouse tonight, Friday March 7th, for On Loving Women, her new collection of stories about coming out, first love, and sexual identity. Diane will present a slideshow and be interviewed by Town Dyke columnist Alex Tigchelaar for what promises to be an insightful, laughter-filled Friday night. Doors open at 9 pm!

"All of us have struggled with the desire to have another see beyond us and right into us at once; we are always trying to transcend our corporeal limitations—whether they relate to gender, race, class or age—to have someone witness the possibility we feel in ourselves. Obomsawin has a gift for speaking to this precious universal desire." —Alex Tigchelaar, Daily Xtra

"A mix of awkward, sexy, heartbreaking, and down-right adorable...Each individual chapter feels like peeking into someone’s personal diary, each story more entrancing than the last." —Sarah Karlan, Buzzfeed

NOW highlights the event, saying "any female who’s fallen for another female can relate to On Loving Women". See you there!

Do you know Pippi?

Of course you've heard of the red-haired, horse-lifting, freckle-faced Pippi Longstocking, but how well do you really know her? Now's your chance to get acquainted, Philadelphia: Do You Know Pippi Longstocking?, an original new exhibition, is coming to the American Swedish Historical Museum !

The show sounds absolutely delightful, and true to Lingren's sense of humor. Kids will have the opportunity to go inside Pippi’s house and cook in her kitchen. The exhibit will be complemented by life-sized tableaus of Ingrid Vang Nyman's beautiful, bright illustrations, and visitors will discover how Astrid Lingren influenced Swedish attitudes towards childhood. In other words, it will be like the best play date imaginable!

Do You Know Pippi Longstocking? is on view from March 23, 2014 until February 16, 2015. The American Swedish Historical Museum is located at 1900 Pattison Avenue, Philadelphia, PA.
