At the feet of a master

Well, Julien beat me to it but we had a great visit by Gilbert Hernandez here in Montreal last week. Here he is at our store giving a presentation on his favourite comics from when he was a kid. This is a Jack Kirby spread of female superheroes and Gilbert pointed out that Kirby was such a great designer and his imagination was so fertile that he could draw a spread like this and you wanted to read a comic about every single character in that double page spread. That ability to remember how he felt as a kid is just one of the talents that Gilbert brings to his new D+Q book Marble Season.

Right after I dropped Gilbert off at the airport, I picked up Julio's Day and I have to say that Gilbert is clearly at the top of his game. Two books, so different, so brilliant, released a week apart. WHO DOES THAT?!?! When has that ever happened? This man is thirty one years into his career and he just released the two of the most complete serious graphic novels of his career. Phenomenal!!
