Beautiful Darkness

When Peg & I went to Angouleme a couple of years ago as part of a wonderful program for foreign publishers to meet with other publishers to buy rights for their countries, we knew we wanted Anouk Ricard's Anna & Froga series but otherwise we were totally open to whatever we might see. There were a number of wonderful surprises—some which we're still considering, some we lost out on, and some that we are just finishing up now. One of these was a complete surprise for me—a grim young adult fantasy book about a community of (for lack of a better word) fairies who come together in the aftermath of a tragedy. The watercolor artwork is alternatively dark and whimsical (executed by the husband/wife team Kerascoët) and the story by Fabien Vehlmann is a classical fantasy tale by way of The Borrowers and Lord of the Flies. Lest I say too much, Chris and I (along with our translator Helge) were astonished how affecting we found this comic especially given that it was not in what me might term "our area of interest."

So, as a sneek peak, here's the new cover by Kerascoët for the North American audience with special title lettering by the enigmatic and fascinating Ray Fenwick. More to come on this book in the months to come.
