Things have been crazy around here with our epic fall season coming to a close (we just bid farewell to Dan and Seth after an exhausting pizza party), but fret not, Internet Friends, we have many more incredible books coming your way this winter. That's what I love (and hate) about publishing—IT NEVER ENDS.
One such winter title is the great Tom Gauld's Goliath. What's that? You don't want to hear about the book just yet and instead you'd like to read a little about Tom's process, his great comics influences (nod to our own Dan Clowes and Chris Ware), and his small-press, Cabanon? But back to more important, er, D+Q-centric things. As the name would suggest, Goliath is a re-imagining of the David and Goliath story, except this time it's told from Goliath's perspective, who's just a gentle giant who'd rather do admin work than fight any battle. Tom's minimalist, geometric lines, countered with heavy, Gorey-esque hatching (who Tom sites as an influence in the above interview, rightfully), bleak humour, and expertly edited dialogue perfectly reinvigorate this classic tale. The result is more successful than I ever could have imagined. But don't take my word for it, I've been tweaking the trapping and adjusting background colours up and down by half-percentages for too long now to be pragmatic.
