Tonight in Vancouver: Sonja Ahler's THE SELVES

Fresh from the printer (And I mean FRESH) is our newest petit livre art book called THE SELVES by visual artist Sonja Ahlers. THE SELVES is a scrapbook of intense femininity that is a fascinating overview of female iconography throughout the years.

Any one, women especially, born in the 70s will connect with Sonja's enchanting pastiche of Holly Hobby, Sybil, Princess Diana and Sweet Valley High, complete with this blurb from Kathleen Hanna: "Sonja Ahler's meditations on childhood, pop culture, and feminine power are beyond entertaining. Entering the alternate reality she has created in the SELVES, I found myself standing somwhere seductive, familiar and very funny."

A year or so ago, I read Sonja's interview on Poppytalk, last summer she had an exhibit at Magic Pony in Toronto and currently she is doing an residency in the Yukon, though she is taking a break to promote the book.

THE SELVES was recently featured, before it even came out, on....

the CBC: The Selves uses words and imagery, assembled in a scrapbook-diary style, from both low and high culture to create a composite portrait of the generation of white, North American women born in the 1970s and 1980s

Frankie Magazine in Australia: Exploring the inetersection between pop culture and female identity

and Bust.com: Collages of beautiful and slightly disturbing things.
